Maybelline New York is on a roll. They launched the Fit Me range and the Hyper Matte Liquid Liner last month. And now, we have two more new launches from them – Color Sensational Lip Gradation matte lip pencils in eight shades and Superstay Gel Nail Color in 24 shades. I was checking out the Lip Gradation pencils at Shoppers Stop, Salt Lake City Centre and picked up two shades – Mauve1 and Fuchsia1. Dunno what is with Maybelline giving such boring names to their lip colors though. These pretty things deserve much better!
So what are these Lip Gradation pencils?
Available in 8 bright, matte shades, this double-sided lip product will inspire you to experiment with your looks and bring out your unique style and personality. The color stick at one end will give a gorgeous pop of color while the cushion blender tool at the other end will give a sexy, graded look. Here’s why you will love it:
- 8 bright, matte shades – Red1, Red2, Fuchsia1, Mauve1, Orange1, Pink1, Pink2, Coral2
- Easy to apply
- Fun, flirty, versatile way to color your lips
- Innovative product with cutting edge technology
- Price: Rs. 500/-
Gradient or ‘cherry lips’ was and probably still is a big trend in Korea and these lip pencils, called Color Blur in the US were created by Maybelline to spread that trend worlwide. It is simply a way to use lipstick to make your mouth look like you’ve been sucking on a popsicle. You can watch Youtube for Gradient Lips Tutorials but the easiest way to get them is to grab your favorite red/hot pink/orange/coral lipstick or lip tint, apply only to the inner part of the lips and then blend the color outwards using either a brush, your fingers, a Q-tip or if you are applying the Maybelline Lip Gradation Matte Pencil, the cushion smudger. Then smack your lips together. Personally, it isn’t really my thing because I like full color covered lips but sometimes, why not? Here’s my version of Gradient Lips using Fuchsia1.
Coming to the Color Sensational Lip Gradation pencils, I’m in love with them. Fuchsia1 is a bright pink with a hint of purple (looks like a barbie pink in the pics coz of the lights but during the day, you can see the purple) and Mauve1, a light brown on me which is the perfect day/office wear lip color for fair-medium skin tones. I was testing them and today, wore both colors. These are twist up pencils so no sharpening required. What is beautiful about them is the pigmentation and texture. They provide solid color with a single swipe and build beautifully. They have a smooth velvety finish and just glide on the lips. They do not accentuate dryness or look dry or settle into my natural lip lines. Mauve1 has a very faint plasticky smell that I don’t like but Fuchsia1 has no fragrance. They wear for about 4-5 hours if you are not having a particularly heavy meal. Mauve1 does not stain the lips but Fuchsia1 leaves behind a light pink stain on fading. They do not feather or bleed.
All in all, the Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Gradation pencils are really good. Whether you want to use them to get gradient lips or not is upto you but as lipsticks, they are really worth buying. And I’m so glad that Maybelline has kept the price at an affordable Rs 500. Great quality product at a great price. I recommend!
