I must admit that my knowledge about Japanese food is quite limited. The only dishes I’ve tried till date are Sushi and Sashimi so when the first Japanese restaurant opened in Kolkata, I was very eager to go and explore more of the cuisine. Fuji is located at 209A Sarat Bose Road and they have an extensive menu with authentic Japanese dishes with reasonable prices compared to the very large portions they serve. The menu is presented by course—appetizers, soups, salads, sashimi/sushi and mains.
At the tasting organised by Fuji, we sampled dishes which included a non-veg sushi and sashimi platter, miso soup and a variety of starters and mains. If you order Sashimi 7 Shu Moriawase, you get seven types of non-veg sashimi which includes prawn, tuna, salmon, octopus etc. Unlike sushi, sashimi is just raw fish sliced thinly that you are supposed to have with soy sauce or wasabi so if you are not comfortable with having raw fish, don’t order sashimi. I like Sashimi and loved the idea of a mixed platter where you get to taste everything.
If sushi is more of your thing, definitely order the Non-veg Makimono Moriawase, the assorted sushi platter which includes favorites like spicy salmon roll, tuna roll etc. For pork lovers, Buta No Shougayaki or grilled pork with ginger sauce is a must try. My favorite was definitely Yakitori Moriawase or assorted grilled meat on skewers. You get minced chicken balls, grilled boneless chicken and leeks and ham and tomatoes.
For the mains, we tried the Chicken Katsu Curry or golden fried chicken, served on a bed of sticky rice accompanied by a rich Katsu curry sauce. This dish is very similar to the Indian style of cooking so if you are fond of your rice and chicken curry, try this Japanese version. And if you can’t have enough of noodles, order Somen Champuru, a stir-fried noodle dish with chive, chicken and tuna flakes. Delicious or Oishi as the Japanese say it :). For dessert we tried two types of ice cream – wasabi and green tea. I preferred the slight tangy flavor of the wasabi to the mild green tea.
Overall, it was a great experience at Fuji and I’m so glad that restaurants like these are opening up in Kolkata to give us a taste of world cuisine. They also have outlets in Delhi and Chennai so if you want to try out authentic Japanese food, book a date with Fuji.
