“So are you going to SpiceKlub on Thursday? Been a long time since I’ve met you and I’m really looking forward” The response was “You going to a pure vegetarian restaurant? Wow! Your wonders never cease to amaze me” This is an excerpt from a conversation I was having with Shikha a.k.a Sorelle Grapevine after we were invited to lunch at SpiceKlub, the latest restaurant in Park Street specializing in molecular gastronomy and pure vegetarian food. If you know me well, you will not find Shikha’s reaction surprising because I pretty much never go to a restaurant to eat a pure vegetarian meal. Why did I agree to go to SpiceKlub? Because 1) I’ve heard good things about the food and read reviews praising it 2) I saw the IG stories of a couple of bloggers who went before me and what they posted looked really delicious. To find out if the restaurant is as good as people claim it to be, I decided to go and try it out myself.
A Coastal Culinary Adventure At The Coastal Macha
Want to go on a coast to coast ride with some regional fare from Kerala, Goa, Karnataka and parts of Maharashtra? Drop in to The Coastal Macha at 55, Southern Avenue (next to Atlanta gym). The restaurant is the brainchild of Sabrina Mukherjee and Piyush Menon, friends who spent many years in Bangalore and who wanted to give Kolkata a taste of authentic coastal cuisine.
In Kolkata, it is tough to get good coastal food. Some of the hotels come up with special promotional events once in a while but there was no restaurant solely dedicated to it. And that is why I’m so thankful for The Coastal Macha. Now, I can get my fix of Sol Kadhi, Chicken Ghee Roast, Prawn and Mutton Sukka anytime I want to!
Desi Khana With A Twist At We.Desi
“The memory of having your favorite street food as a child or of the aroma of masalas at home. An amalgamation of our favourite meals from all over the country- Butter Chicken from Punjab, Mutton Vindaloo from Goa, Kashmiri Dum Aloo, Kolkata Macher Jhol is found here. Their innovative dishes include Crusted Mahi Tikka, We.Desi Paneer Cigars, Khichada and Soya Gola Kebab. Spice infused cocktails like Tandoori Narangi Martini, Tamatar and Kasundi Margarita and Beer Jhalfarezi are some of the special cocktails that bring out the distinct flavour of different states of the country. Everything from the décor to the street food concoctions beckons to those who want to be inspired and immersed in a sensational culinary experience without the fuss of formal dining”. That is the essence of We.Desi, Kolkata’s newest gastro-pub located at 22, Camac Street.
We.Desi is located in the same place which housed Grain of Salt and Ivory. Spread across 3000 sq ft, this place is huge! They have various counters like a phuchka stall that greets you once you enter, a bar counter and something called a Curryaki (curry + teppanyaki). A seat here means a live thali experience as you take your pick from the Curryaki Set Meals — soup and salad of the day, dal, a main course of paneer/ chicken/ prawn, rice, breads and dessert.
Bakstage, The Resto Rock Pub At Salt Lake, Sec V, Kolkata
If you stay in Salt Lake or work in the Sec V/Rajarhat area, I’m sure you have heard about Bakstage, the Resto Rock Pub. It came as a blessing for people who work in that area because till then, apart from a few restaurants, there was no place where you could go to after work to unwind, have a few drinks, listen to good music and also eat good food. Bakstage changed all that three years back and even though a few similar places have opened since then, the original one still rocks!
Bakstage is divided into two sections. The ground floor has the cafe and bakery and the first floor is where all the pub action takes place. Every day something or the other keeps happening like Sufi Wednesdays, Karaoke Thursdays etc. Right now, they are having the Octoberfest till 3rd Oct so if you want to guzzle a few beers, head over there. I visited Bakstage a few days back and tasted some dishes from their latest menu. Since I went there after work, I was advised to try out the Beer Margarita, a mammoth drink! It has the ‘goodness’ of a margarita and a beer together so you can very well imagine what the after effect will be like. If you have had a particularly rough day at work and just want to drown yourself in alcohol, this is the perfect drink!
A Taste of Japan in Kolkata At Fuji
I must admit that my knowledge about Japanese food is quite limited. The only dishes I’ve tried till date are Sushi and Sashimi so when the first Japanese restaurant opened in Kolkata, I was very eager to go and explore more of the cuisine. Fuji is located at 209A Sarat Bose Road and they have an extensive menu with authentic Japanese dishes with reasonable prices compared to the very large portions they serve. The menu is presented by course—appetizers, soups, salads, sashimi/sushi and mains.
