Walk in to Hoppipola and you will immediately cheer up at the sight of the pretty blue, yellow and white Mediterranean decor. You will forget that you have entered into a restaurant. It feels more like a fun playschool for grownups!. There are cute and quirky elements strewn about everywhere. From toy planes suspended from the ceiling to a Jenga stack in a corner to granite tables that double up as scribble chalkboards to a Wall Of Happiness that hides complimentary vodka shots for women, Hoppipola really wants us to eat, drink, play and be h’o’ppi!
The literal meaning of Hoppipola is ‘jumping in puddles’ in Icelandic and the philosophy behind this chain of restaurants under the Speciality Restaurants Ltd brand is that you don’t need to be young to have fun. Some grownups might find the place to be kiddish but once you settle down, you do want to bring out that kid in you. It is not a fine dining restaurant but a fun dining one – a hybrid of a restaurant, cafe, bar and a play area.
Hoppipola focuses more on the drinks than food so you get a pretty extensive drinks menu here. And their presentation is as quirky as the overall vibe of the place. Their most famous drink is the Bird Cage, presented in a bird cage and containing 1000 ml of white rum, orange liqueur and various fruits. Three other Hoppi specials are Drown in a Bucket (tequila+peach+orange juice+burnt rosemary), Hoppi Bath Tub (white rum + beer + basil+ burnt orange) and Da VinciTini (vodka espresso+baileys+choice of dark/white/caramel chocolate). If you really want to drink, then Hoppipola is the place to come to because their standard measurement is 400 ml. You also get 1000 ml!
For starters, I tried the vegetarian OMG which matches up to its description of being one of the best mushroom dishes you will have. I also liked the Chicken Trilogy (three flavors of skewered and grilled chicken), Fishful Thinking (fried fish) and The New Age Wing Man (spicy chicken wings). Not just the decor, they have quirky names for their food too! For the mains, I had a portion of Spaghetti Aglio Alio and Cup of Oriental (galangal and kafir lime flavored thai green curry served with rice) and I loved both. The choice of desserts is sadly limited though. They only have a rum soaked banoffee pie and chocolate icecream with brownie. Why Hoppipola? Dessert makes us happy too!
Overall, I really liked Hoppipola and will be hopping over there very soon. It is a great place to relax, unwind, listen to good music and catch up with friends. Thank you for having me over 🙂
