Remember the year 1995? Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge had released, I was a teen and madly in love with Raj a.k.a. Shahrukh Khan. That time, there were no multiplexes and going to the movies was not a regular affair so I watched it at home thanks to my local ‘cablewala’. DDLJ was the topic of discussion in school and we girls used to buy posters and swoon over SRK’s dimples and his Raj act. 1995 or rather the 90’s were also popular for another thing. The brown lipstick! Everyone used to wear it. Even Kajol in DDLJ wore mostly brown lipstick if you remember.
With the turn of the century, lip colors started to get bolder and brighter and brown was somehow relegated to being a ‘mom’ color. Fashion magazines advised against wearing brown as it would make one appear much older and so the reds, hot pinks and oranges had a field day. But as they say, old is gold and remarkably, brown made a stunning comeback primarily due to Kylie Jenner. In 2014, everyone was trying to do a Kylie Jenner lip and Gerard Cosmetics also got into the act of coming out with that perfect KJ lip color. The result? Gerard Cosmetics 1995 lipstick created in collaboration with popular Youtuber, Jaclyn Hill.
There is a story behind this lipstick. I had actually ordered it back in November but it got lost in transit. I sent out a few emails for a refund but those were not actioned and I just lost hope. God bless Renji and Nabamita who told me to get in touch with Gerard on their Instagram page for instant replies and that’s what I did. I wrote a comment and within an hour, got a response. They were very sweet and they sent me the lipstick once again after nearly six months along with a 50% off coupon code. Thankfully, this time there were no hassles and 1995 came to me in all its glory. If you are looking for good offers, follow Gerard Cosmetics on Instagram because they keep coming up with bundle offers and free international shipping codes. I did not have to pay customs for my package.
The 90’s brown was not really a true dark brown. It had a hint of rose pink and 1995 captures that beautifully. The lipstick looks really pretty with its gold casing and I like the semi-matte yet non-drying texture. You will need a couple of swipes to cover pigmented lips but it is such a pretty color. The lipstick stays on me for nearly 4-5 hours and does not bleed or feather.
Gerard Cosmetics 1995 lipstick costs $19.95 but as I wrote above, they keep giving offers so you can get it at a much lesser price. In terms of texture, honestly, I’ve used better lipsticks that come cheaper but 1995 is a beautiful color and that makes it an “excellent to have” lipstick for me. This is what I look like wearing it.
What do you think of 1995? Yay or Nay?
