We love to do a lot of things to our hair. We love to experiment with colors, chemical treatments, hair styling products etc. While all of this no doubt makes us look good, the fact of the matter is that our hair suffers in the process. Keratin which is the essential component of our hair tends to deplete over time due to age and also due to these chemical services. And that gives rise to all our hair related woes. Dryness, frizz, lack of shine, brittle hair etc etc. How do you get this keratin or protein back to your hair? Through a Keratin Hair Treatment and that is what I received a few days back thanks to GKhair.
GKhair is a manufacturer of salon professional hair care products and keratin hair treatments and they have been doing this for the last 10 years. This year is the 10th anniversary of the brand and to celebrate, they organised a ‘Keratin Day’ at Head Turners Salon & Spa in Kolkata last week. I met the GKhair team that day, got to know about keratin, how the treatment works on the hair, what are the do’s and don’ts after the treatment, etc. Here’s a guide to help you out.
About Juvexin – Juvexin is a keratin anti-aging protein blend. It started with keratin, and then evolved to Juvexin. GKhair is the first and only company to harness the beauty benefits of Juvexin, which is delivered to the hair in its natural state. Derived from pristine sheep wool through an environmentally friendly process, Juvexin is found in GKhair Products worldwide.
The Treatment –
- The treatment starts off with the specialist checking the hair and also asking a number of questions like when did you last color? when did you last try out a chemical service? how long since you applied henna? etc etc. The purpose of this consultation is for the specialist to understand your hair history, hair type and also determine which formula of Juvexin is ideal for your hair
- After the consultation, the hair is shampooed with a GKhair ph+ Clarifying shampoo
- It is then towel-dried, then it is sectioned and the Juvexin Keratin formula is applied to 1/2 inch sections of the hair. For my hair, I was given Formula 2
- The product is worked through the entire head staying 1/4 inch off the scalp making sure the hair is thoroughly saturated
- For the next 5-60 minutes (from 5 minutes for fine, wavy hair to 60 minutes for thick, coarse, tight curls), the product is left on the hair. I waited for about 20 minutes
- Then, hair is blow-dried straight and then flat-ironed to seal in the keratin. The entire process takes nearly 3 hours depending on the hair length
- For the next 48 hours, you are not supposed to wash your hair, tie it in a ponytail or use clips and not use styling products. The hair needs to be worn down at all times and if it gets wet, you are supposed to blow dry and smooth with a flat iron. After 48 hours, you are recommended to go back to the salon for your first wash with a GKhair shampoo and conditioner. Post the wash, you can style your hair however you want to.
The above is the only way that a GKhair Keratin treatment works. Your hair is shampooed only once before the treatment and not after the keratin is applied. Apparently, quite a few unscrupulous salons nowadays mix hair smoothening chemicals into the keratin. Raise an alarm if you see that your hair is being shampooed multiple times and if you get a strong smell of ammonia.
At Head Turners, the price of the GKhair Keratin treatment is around Rs 7000.
Effect
I was told that a standard keratin treatment effect lasts for nearly 4-5 months depending on the quality of your hair. It works best on virgin or chemically treated hair. If you apply henna regularly, this treatment will most probably not work because henna coats the hair and it makes it difficult for the keratin to penetrate.
To ensure that the effect of the treatment lasts for a long time, it is recommended to use GKhair products. For my oily scalp and dry ends, I was given the Balancing Shampoo, Color Protection Conditioner and a Serum.
This is what my hair looked like just after the treatment. I got my first wash on Tuesday and while I don’t have that poker straight look anymore, I love how smooth my hair feels and how shiny it looks.
Here are the answers to some more common questions.
FAQs (Source GKhair)
Q. What is JUVEXIN?
A. JUVEXIN is the ONLY keratin compound scientifically proven to protect and restore hair back to its youthful state.
Q. Why is JUVEXIN different than other keratins?
A. Other products in the market today are made with hydrolyzed or over processed keratin where the long chains of amino acids are broken and the capability of the protein to bind to the hairs natural keratin is destroyed.
Q. Is this a relaxer?
A. No. Global Keratins Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN is a system that restores hair to its pristine condition. It does not change the genetic make up of hair. Rather, it makes hair more manageable, easy to style and frizz-free.
Q. Do I always have to wear my hair straight or can I style my hair?
A. After the first wash you can style your hair in any manner you desire. Since the Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN does not change the structural integrity of your hair, your hair will hold any style like before the application.
Q. Does the Hair Taming System work on virgin hair?
A. Yes. The Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN will provide excellent results on any hair type. On virgin hair, best results will be achieved after the second or third application.
Q. Can the Hair Taming System be done on any type of damaged hair?
A. Yes, the Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN treatment can be applied on ANY previous chemical treatment (colored, highlighted, relaxed, bleached or virgin hair).
Q. Is it best to apply the Hair Taming System before or after coloring?
A. For optimal results, color/highlighting processes should be done before applying the Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN. In addition, both procedures may be done on the same visit. Otherwise, wait 2 weeks after the treatment application to apply color/highlights.
Q. Why do I have to wait to wash my hair?
A. We recommend that you wait because it takes 48 hours for the JUVEXIN to form a stronger bond to the hair cortex. If hair is washed right after the treatment, some or most of the Juvexin may wash out and the results of the application will not last as long as desired.
Q. Can I wear a ponytail or tie the hair up?
A. No, during the first 48 hours following the application the hair should not be tied up with any bands or clips.
Q. What should I do if I create a bend in my hair while sleeping?
A. Blow dry the section of hair as soon as possible and/or use a flat iron to re-straighten the hair.
Q. What should I do if my hair gets wet during the first 48 hours?
A. Blow dry the section of hair as soon as possible and/or use a flat iron to re-seal the cuticle.

A. The Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN treatment will last about 3-5 months depending on the hair type and maintenance. The system works better on chemically treated hair.

A. No, the Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN application will gradually wash out after 3 5 months.
Q. Can I go into the ocean or the pool after receiving the Hair Taming System?

A. To maintain the results and make the treatment last longer we recommend that you only use Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN shampoos and conditioners.

A. Styling products can be used after the first shampoo. However, we recommend that you always use the Global Keratin Hair Taming System with JUVEXIN line of product that are specifically designed with JUVEXIN.
Q. Can I get the Hair Taming System done while pregnant or nursing?
A. While there are no known adverse effects, pregnant women and nursing mothers should consult a physician prior to any type of hair treatment.
