Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will know that MAC Cosmetics is finally available at Nykaa. The concerns I had after hearing the news was whether 1) the prices would be the same as in the stores and 2) if they would have the same collection and not a capsule one. I am happy to say yes to both and in fact, online they are actually launching products that have not hit the stores yet. I am talking about the twelve new MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick shades that are part of the Spring 2017 collection. These are as of now only available at Nykaa and I picked up two of them – Topped With Brandy and Chocotease. The liquid lipsticks are priced at Rs 1850 each.
There was a time when I would only wear bright lip colors and stay away from the n*des. Strangely, n*des are the only shades that I get attracted to nowadays! Dark chocolate, dirty rose, taupe, various shades of brown. I am obsessed with these colors and that is why despite the pocket pinch, I picked up the two Retro Mattes. Not all the 12 shades are suitable for the Indian skin tone though. The lighter ones resemble concealer and foundation shades and on most of us will look terrible. The darker colors are beautiful and I was immediately attracted to the two I picked up. Topped With Brandy is a deep dirty rose and is a permanent addition to the Retro Matte line. Chocotease is a very dark chocolate which looks close to black on the lips and is limited edition.
I now have five shades in the MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick range, the earlier ones being Red Jade, Dance With Me and Oh Lady. If you have read the reviews, you will know what I think of them. Great pigmentation but some of them can apply slightly patchy, lasts for a long time but can get very drying. With these new shades I feel that MAC has improved the texture slightly. Pigmentation is brilliant and I get full coverage in just a single swipe. They have a lightweight, mousse like texture and apply smoothly and evenly. Both colors last for nearly eight hours and these are not as drying as the earlier versions. Not saying that they are hydrating or anything but I did not feel like I had to slather my lips with a balm an hour after applying the lipsticks. They feel much better and are quite comfortable on the lips.
Are these shades really unique? Not really because most brands are bringing out colors like these nowadays. You have ColourPop, Kat Von D, Kylie Cosmetics, Tarte, NYX etc who have a range of muted browns, taupes and greys. NYX recently launched new shades in the Lip Lingerie range and you are sure to find dupes of the MAC Retro Mattes there. Unfortunately, that collection is not available in India yet (attention Nykaa!)
