Step inside Mrs Magpie and you feel like you’ve been invited to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. The bright facade, the doll house decor, the eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional furniture make it one of the prettiest cafes in the city. And the highlight of the decor is the window display that changes every season. Currently, the residents are tiny marzipan figures eating phuchka and popcorn and riding on a ‘Nagordola’ or Ferris Wheel. Yes, Mrs Magpie is also revelling in the spirit of Durga Puja.
Along with the decorations, Sohini Basu, the woman behind Mrs Magpie has also come up with some Puja special food items and I was invited for a tasting last week. There are four new types of tarts – Zucchini, Bell Pepper, Broccoli and Creamy Chicken. My favorite was obviously the Chicken tart. Creamy, cheesy, delicious and full of flavor. Sohini mentioned that she’s managed to source a new type of flour and is extremely excited about the possibilities. The Creamy Chicken Sandwich and Veg Patty Sandwich were made with this new flour and I liked how light they were. Other new items include a whole range of delicious cookies – Chocolate Oat, Cranberry Shortbread and Cranberry White Chocolate. I’m not supposed to have cakes or cookies but I could not resist the temptation and polished off around 4-5 of them. The chocolate oat cookies are bombs! You can’t even figure out they have oats inside. I just got a mouthful of dark chocolate and it was delicious!
The Puja spirit extends to Mrs Magpie’s famous cakes and cupcakes as well. There are super cute owl cake pops and four varieties of cupcakes that have special Pujo designs on them – Sweet and Salty , Marshmallow , Nutty Praline and After Eightish. Expect cupcakes with ‘shiuli’ flowers and alpana designs.
Make sure to include Mrs Magpie in your list of places to eat at during the Pujas. The Puja Specials will be available throughout October.
