Let me warn you right away. If you are on a diet or planning to go on one soon, you should stay far far away from My Big Fat Belly, a new restaurant that has garnered some rave reviews. However, if you care more about a juicy burger or a cheesy pizza than the size of your belly, you must visit this restaurant because the food here is insanely good. We had our Kolkata Food Fanatics meet there last month and I was mighty impressed by what I ate.
The restaurant is located where The Little Donkey used to be, on Sarat Bose Road. It is a small joint and seats are limited so it is almost always full. I really liked the atmosphere of the place. It is done up in bright colors, there are quirky posters on the wall and in general, you feel a good vibe when you step inside.
For KFF, My Big Fat Belly curated a special menu with mocktails, salad, appetizers, main course and dessert. I loved the Watermelon Mojito which had both sweet and tangy flavors. This will be a big hit in summer for sure. I’ve never been much of a salad person especially if it is purely vegetarian hence I did not really pay much attention to the Figs, Greens and Feta Salad. But then, I heard Rahul saying how good it was and how could I not listen to a chef? I asked for a small portion of the salad and I was stumped by the taste. The sweetness of the fig, the crunch of the pine nuts and greens with the creamy feta. Different flavors but each of them combined to make it one of the best salads I’ve had in recent times. Oh yes, and it is healthy too!
The star of the meal were the chicken and pork sausages which surprisingly are made in-house. The sausages have a different texture and flavor than the regular ones. These are thicker and spicier and when combined with bell peppers, make for an excellent appetizer. I also loved the Non-Veg fondue platter with a generous serving of bacon, sausage, prawn, chicken, cheese toast, fries and the cheese fondue. Me and Debjani pretty much hijacked the entire platter and finished it off in minutes. I loved the bacon which was done exactly how I like it. Not too crisp, not too salty and with more meat than fat. If you are vegetarian, there is also a Veg Platter which you might like.
My Big Fat Belly does not scrimp on portion size so you should keep that in mind while ordering. By the time we came to the pizza and main course, my belly had given up on me. I could not have more food so just tasted a bit of the pizza and packed the Baked Fish with Gandhoraj Lebu to have the next day. The pizza was excellent. Thin crust, not too cheesy and meaty. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you much about the Baked Fish because it was polished off at home in my absence. I was told by my mom later that she loved it.
MBFB is extremely popular for their burgers and I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Juicy Lucy. The Braised Lamb Shank looked quite appealing as well. Those two are on my list to try out the next time I am there.
