For Summer 2015, we are inspired by the palette and energy of the true getaway. Style, performance and water come together to reflect the youthful spirit of the islands. It’s all about adventure!
True to its inspiration, Nautica’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection is all about stripes and bold tropical colors that interpret nautical in a more graphic and interesting way. I was at the Nautica store in South City mall to check out the new collection and I loved the riot of colors that greeted me when I stepped inside. In Kolkata, Nautica has two stores. One in South City Mall which stocks both men and women’s wear and the other in Quest Mall which is exclusively for men’s wear.
Men’s Collection
The men definitely have an advantage over women. The men’s collection takes up half of the store and there are shirts, tshirts, shorts, trousers etc all in the colors and fabrics of summer. You will see an abundance of blue, green, orange, yellow and white. In fact, navy and white are the dominant colors in both men and women’s wear. I particularly liked the color blocked linen shirts and the bright tshirts. One that really stood out for me was the tshirt in yellow and the blue and white stripes. Linen is a summer staple and since I was looking for an oversized white shirt for quite some time, picked up a slim fit white shirt from the men’s collection. The mix of stripes, color blocking, and soft, lightweight fabrics of the collection provides the perfect wardrobe essentials that will keep you looking cool and smart in this scorching heat. Apart from clothes, they also have some new watches that are really worth checking out. I loved the one with the orange strap.
Nautica is a high end lifestyle brand and their prices are steep. The linen shirts are priced around Rs 5000 and the tshirts are in the Rs 2000-3000 range. The fabric and quality is excellent though. Here is a glimpse of the men’s collection.
Women’s Collection
The women’s collection is all about breezy, easy-to-wear pieces and focuses on :
- Dresses
- A variety of jackets like the anorak, trench and the white linen asymmetrical moto-jacket
- Seaside inspired pieces like boyfriend shirts, utility pants and tops and tshirts in a variety of sail stripe combinations
One unique piece is a maxi skirt that can also transform to a maxi dress. If you are fond of jackets, my recommendation will be the white linen moto-jacket. It is pretty expensive at nearly Rs 9000 but it looks so smart and stylish. Loved that piece! Another piece I liked was a white and black striped short skirt. I don’t have the figure to carry it off but that skirt teamed with a bright top or tshirt will look wonderful. If you like dresses, there are some good ones there as well. Nautica has a wide range of sizes so getting a perfect fit won’t be an issue.
One problem that I have with summer collections is the fact that brands make nearly everything sleeveless or with really short sleeves. For someone like me with fat arms who does not want to show them off, it becomes a problem because in this heat, you need to wear a shrug or a jacket on top. I wish more clothes had sleeves as well. I would have also liked to see more of prints and feminine cuts. The focus is mainly on color blocking and polo style tops and tshirts. I loved the nautical stripes but would have liked to see some vertical stripes as well that are curvy body friendly.
Below is a preview of the Nautica Spring/Summer Women’s collection.
I was in a hurry so could not take pics of myself wearing some pieces from the collection in the store but I’ve already worn what I got and I love them. One is a printed sleeveless top and the other, a white oversized linen shirt. This is what they look like on me.
Overall, I loved the bright color palette of the summer collection and the nautical stripes. The fabrics used are all lightweight and perfect for this weather. If I have to recommend a must have, it would be that linen white jacket in women’s wear and any of the linen shirts in men’s wear. The rain-friendly clothes are interesting as well.
