Afraa Lounge & Restaurant was probably one of the first to start the concept of a Sunday brunch in the city. I’ve been an Afraa regular since the place opened a few years back and the Afraa Sunday brunch has always been a favorite.
First of all, the ambience is great. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and eating a relaxed meal overlooking the Salt Lake skyline on a Sunday afternoon feels really nice. Second of all, they serve unlimited soft and hard drinks and cocktails. Third reason is that the brunch includes a huge spread with all kinds of veg and non-veg food – cold cuts, salads, an excellent selection of cheese, grilled meat and veggies, main course with Indian, Oriental and Continental fare and delicious desserts. Fourth reason is that for all of this, the price of the Sunday brunch is very economical. It is only Rs 999 plus taxes.
Afraa Sunday Brunch
Everytime I go for a buffet, I end up eating so much of the starters, salads and cold cuts that there is hardly any space left for the main course. And that is what happened again last Sunday. I had multiple servings of the delicious prawn cocktail which had the right mix of mayo and cocktail sauce. What happens in most restaurants nowadays is that when you order a prawn cocktail, all you get are a few tiny pieces of shrimps drowned in too much mayo and sauce. The one at Afraa was just perfect.
I was very impressed by the selection of cheese as well. They have Bandel cheese, Kalimpong cheese, Chilli Garlic cheese, Parmesan, Cheddar etc that you can pair with fruits, crackers, olives, nuts and/or chutney. The carnivores should not miss the cold cuts section and the carving station. The tender and juicy roast chicken was definitely worth multiple helpings. There is also a selection of kababs and wontons that are served on the table.
In the main course, there were plenty of options but I stuck to the basics – pulao, kaali dal and mutton biryani. I won’t say extraordinary but good, decent food.
For dessert, they had the usual chocolate tart, cheesecakes and pastries but if you love to experiment with your food, try the green chilli rossogolla. It is sweet but leaves a slightly spicy aftertaste which is actually quite good!
Overall, I can safely say that Afraa has one of the best Sunday brunches in Kolkata. Good food at a very reasonable price makes it one of my favorite places to go to on a Sunday afternoon.
