I’ve been a Paris Café fan ever since Sneha Singhi opened the first outlet opposite Ice Skating Rink in Kolkata. The charming decor, the Parisian vibe and of course the wonderful food and beautiful desserts keep bringing me back to the place again and again. I recently visited the latest Paris Café outlet in Alipore for dinner with twenty of my foodie friends from Kolkata Food Fanatics and it was a wonderful experience.

Kolkata witnessed its first ‘ Sorbet’ degustation at the Mama Mia! outlet in Ballygunge with Damiano Francovigh, Consulate General of Italy, Kolkata, and noted hair stylist Raman Bharadwaj among others. The occasion was the launch of Mama Mia!’s Super Sorbet Specials.
The flavors include :
- Watermelon and Mint Sorbet : Watermelon and mint leaves blended into one perfect summer cooler
- Grilled Pineapple Sorbet : Char grilled caramelized pineapples mixed with pieces of pineapple fruit in a pineapple sorbet base
- Blood Orange and Pomegranate : Blood Orange juice mixed into the sorbet base with pomegranate varigato
- Mandarin Orange Basil : An oriental twist to the sorbet spread with the freshness of mandarin oranges and fresh basil
- Alphonso Super Sorbet : This sorbet has over 50% fruit content. It is like eating a frozen alphonso mango.
- Sicily Lemon : Sicilian lemons and sugar. Simple and delicious
Scoring high on natural fruit content and being fat free, sorbets are a healthier alternative to ice creams and desserts. Zero fat, high in anti-oxidants and natural fruit content, vitamins and minerals, Mama Mia! sorbets are priced at Rs 69+ taxes and they will be available at all outlets till August. And which flavor did I like the most? Alphonso Super Sorbet for sure. Creamy and packed with the flavor of alphonso mangoes, this is a must have!
Ramzan Special Buffet At K-19, Park Plaza, Kolkata
If you are looking for a good buffet in Kolkata, you should definitely go to K-19 at Park Plaza, Ballygunge. Their spread is huge and they have a wide selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes and desserts. Recently, they have also started a rather interesting Night Revellers Buffet, available from 10 pm – 1 am, specially created for late night party goers. And the best thing about the buffet is that you get to eat all that food at a discount of 50%! For Ramzan, K-19 has included a few special dishes in the dinner and Night Revellers Buffet and I was invited by the management for a tasting.
Coorg Food Festival At Swissotel Kolkata Neotia Vista Till 26th June 2016
Coorg is known as the land of tranquil forests and hills, weekend retreats and coffee plantations. Coorg is also known for its cuisine which is predominantly non-vegetarian. Rice in many forms is the foundation of most meals along with fish and meat, specially pork. Coconut is a common ingredient in many of the tangy and spicy Coorg curries, ground with onions, garlic and spices such as chilies, cumin, pepper, etc. with Kachampuli, a black vinegar made from the black kokum fruit. If you want to experience this delightful cuisine, head over to Durbari at Swissotel Kolkata and taste some wonderful and authentic Coorg dishes, showcased as part of the Coorg Food Festival.
What can you expect? Meen Bezule (fish cooked with bezule powder and tomatoes), Kori Sukka (shallow fried boneless leg of chicken marinated with cumin, pepper and red chili paste), Kori Gassi (chicken cooked with tomatoes, garlic and tamarind pulp), Yetti Manjara (prawns marinated with kachampuli paste and cooked with onions and tomatoes), Coorg Mutton Curry (lamb cooked with kachampuli and garam masala), Eddi Kal Menasu (crab cooked with pepper corn and green chili), Baale Hannina Akki Roti (a chapatti-like pancake made from cooked rice and rice flour) and many more. Vegetarians, do not lose heart! You can choose from dishes like Sunda Kadale (boiled chickpeas cooked with chili flakes, grated mango and ginger), Neer Dosa, Bagala Bhaat (rice with yoghurt and served with pickle and papad), Chekke Curry (raw jackfruit curry) etc. Delicious desserts like the special Basundi and Akki Mango Payasha will round off the meal.
For carnivores like me, Coorg cuisine is a delight! Durbari’s menu does not have pork but the abundance of meat and fish make up for that loss. If you have never had Coorg cuisine before, expect the food to be rich, spicy and packed with flavors. So glad Swissotel took the initiative to give us a taste of it!
The Coorg Food Festival is on at Durbari, Level 2, Swissotel Kolkata from 16-26 June, 2016. The timings are from Monday to Sunday 7-11 pm for dinner and for lunch, from 12.30-3.00 pm on Friday and the weekend.
P.S – I was invited by Swissotel to cover the festival
