What is the first word that comes to your mind when you hear the word Shack? I bet 80% of you will say Goa. Right? And then if you are not from Goa, you will go on to say how you miss the shacks, the food, the drinks, the beach, the sunrise, sunset and the ambience. Well, if you are in Kolkata, you can enjoy a near similar shack experience (minus the sea and sand of course) at Smoke Shack, the rooftop bar at Hotel Park Plaza.
Spread over an area of 8,000 square feet, with space for 114 guests, Smoke Shack is an award-winning rooftop restaurant presenting an upmarket, open-air dining option with some of the most delicious barbecue in Kolkata. The restaurant offers a rustic yet elegant ambience through the traditional “shack” concept from Goa, alongside an island bar unique to the city of Kolkata and a dance floor for party enthusiasts. The Smoke Shack provides sizzling live barbecues, fiery cocktails and a giant screen that offers live entertainment to set the mood for a perfect evening.
Last Sunday, along with a few fellow bloggers and friends, I visited Smoke Shack to taste their revamped menu and I was impressed! We were there at 3pm and due to the blazing sun and terrible humidity, the venue was shifted to K-19, the hotel’s all day dining, multi-cuisine restaurant.
We tasted some of the original Smoke Shack favorites and also got a chance to interact with Chef Jayanta who suggested we try out the new additions to the menu. By the end of the meal, I could not move! I started off with a Classic Mojito that gave the much needed respite from the heat. Not only in food, they have revamped the cocktail menu as well. It has been divided into seven categories based on their intensity or purpose – Blends of Smoke Shack, Sparklesack- , Caipiriniack,- Smojito , S-L-ack , Just Martiniack and Breezershack.
For the main course, we started off with the veg and non-veg Kebab Platter and moved on to Lamb Cutlet with Rosemary and Lemon, Grilled Cottage Cheese and American Corn Steak, Steak Major Cunningham and finally the Jamaican Pork Chop.
I am a hard-core carnivore so only concentrated on the meat. I loved the Kebab platter, Lamb cutlet and the Major Cunningham Steak. It’s very hard to find a place that serves a good tenderloin steak and I was really happy with how the chef made mine. Medium, tender, moist and juicy, full-flavored and simply mouth watering! If you are a steak lover, don’t miss this one at Smoke Shack. I wasn’t too happy with the Pork Chop though. It was just a thick slab of fat and very less meat. Even for a carnivore, that was a bit too much to digest.
For dessert, Chef recommended Basbousa, a Turkish specialty which tasted very similar to that of our mawa cake. I’m usually very particular when it comes to desserts and rarely do I like anything that does not have chocolate but this one with the orange dip, I liked. We also ordered a New York Cheesecake which was good. If you are looking for a lot of dessert options, you will be disappointed because these are the only two in the menu. I hope Chef Jayanta takes notice and includes some more options for us chocoholics and dessert lovers in general.
It was around 5 pm that we finished our meal and the time was right to go up to the 7th floor to explore Smoke Shack. I loved the feel and the relaxed vibe. You can sit by the pool with a drink enjoying the music and the beautiful view of the city. I’ve heard that it is magical to see the sunset from the rooftop and I’m definitely going back to experience it.
