One designer that I’ve been wanting to visit for the longest time in Kolkata is Abhishek Ray. I used to see pictures of Sreenanda Shankar wearing his beautiful creations and I would admire the designs, the craftsmanship and the creativity. A couple of days back, I finally met Abhishek at the bloggers meet at his new flagship store and spoke about all things fashion.
Abhishek after getting a degree from NIFT Kolkata in 2005 stepped into the Indian fashion industry with a ten year long stint as the Creative Head of a well-known ethnic wear brand based in Kolkata. He then decided to venture out and start the Abhishek Ray label along with his partner Abhilasha Shaw Arora. The launch of his tastefully decorated flagship store last month is another milestone in his illustrious career.
Abhishek Ray is essentially an Indian wear brand and the designer is very fond of Indian craft forms and textiles, bright colors and lays a lot of emphasis on the right cut and shape of a garment. He loves how various fabrics, colors and textures enhance the human silhouette. And he also believes in thinking out of the box and not follow trends blindly.
What I loved about his collection is the fact that there is something for everyone – from heavy embroidery and bridal wear to simple, minimalist designs. And the best part is that he customizes clothes so if something does not fit or if you want something different then he will make it. He has also recently ventured into customised menswear. Prices start from Rs 4500 for separates and goes up to 15-20k depending upon the garment.
Here is a glimpse of what you can expect at the store.
Thank you Abhishek and Ankita a.k.a Miss Chaos for having me over 🙂
