When a smoothie and juice bar opens up five outlets in a span of thirteen months, you know they are doing something right. I had heard great things about The Yellow Straw but it was only till I visited their restaurant last weekend did I understand what the craze was all about. The Yellow Straw is the brainchild of two ex corporate honchos, Piyush and Vikram, who decided that starting off something on their own was much more rewarding than slogging it out for someone else. They realized that the juice bar concept in Kolkata had not yet caught on and thus started The Yellow Straw.
The restaurant is located in the very busy BBD Bagh Area ( 4, RN Mukherjee Road, Opposite Martin Burn Building, North to be exact). They also have outlets/carts in the Tolly Club, High Court area, Rajarhat Ecospace and in front of RDB Cinemas in Salt Lake Sec V. I visited the restaurant on a very quiet Sunday and loved the cheery decor of the place. It is done up in blue and yellow with quirky and fun posters, knick knacks and furniture. That day, we bloggers must have consumed pretty much everything that’s on the menu. We started off with regular size glasses and later had to shift to small shots because we were full but also could not resist the temptation. Yes, we are gluttons!
First up was The Yellow Straw blockbuster, Chilli Pataka Straw, a mix of green chilli , kiwi and pineapple. If you like your juice to be tangy and spicy, this is the one you should definitely go for. Since I’ve been having some skin issues, I thought of trying out Skin Glow Straw that includes apple, ginger, beet, carrot and lemon. One glass of that juice and I was already half full. All of The Yellow Straw’s juices are cold-pressed, made without water, pulpy and therefore quite thick and filling. Earlier, I used to hate pulpy juices but then realized that the health benefit actually lies in the pulp and now, I can’t have the clear variant.
We not only tried out the juices but also some of the snacks that are available. It is a veg joint and they don’t have a wide variety but what they have is sufficient for a quick meal. We tried a soyabean sandwich, cheese chilli, cheese garlic and sweet chilli potato toasties and corn and spinach snackies. Out of these, I loved the sweet chilli potato toasty and the potato filling reminded me of the alu dum that you get at chaat counters. Spicy, slightly sweet and tangy! I also loved the spinach snackies which is really a mixture of corn and spinach on salted biscuits. Simple yet innovative and creative.
I won’t go into details of all the juices that I tried that day coz that will make the post reallly long. If you are looking for my recommendation, try out Chilli Pataka Straw, Summer Cooler Straw, Power Punch Straw, Mint Cooler and the Chocolate Shake. For the mango season, they have a special menu with mango shakes, juices and an amazing mango sundae with icecream, mango slices, nuts, caramel and butterscotch. It won’t be available for too long so head over to one of The Yellow Straw Outlets ASAP! The price of everything in the menu is very reasonable so will not burn a hole in your pocket. Just juice it up at The Yellow Straw 😀
